A guide to askingHelp without belittling

A good answer
shows the way forward.

Better questions need considerate answers too. Ask clearly for missing details, and do not treat being new as a reason to belittle someone.

A conversation that stalls

Sara

This is basic. Go search before you ask!

It does not explain what is missing or what to do next.

A question someone can answer

Sara

Could you add the tool version and a small sample input? This section of the documentation explains the conversion. If your output differs, share the exact error so we can narrow it down.

The missing information and the next step are clear and respectful.

Explain the reasoning too

Explain why your answer works and where it applies. If you are uncertain, state your assumptions and uncertainty. A relevant link helps, but add a short explanation so the answer does not depend entirely on that link staying available.

When context is missing, ask for specific information. Focus on the problem rather than the asker’s ability or character. If you do not have time or interest, you do not have to join the conversation.

Sharing a guide should help someone take the next step. Add a sentence explaining how it relates to their question instead of using it as a dismissal.
