A guide to askingJust ask

Don't ask to ask.
Just ask.

You do not need a round of permission before asking a question. Explain the problem in your first message so people can see how to help.

A conversation that stalls

Sara

Hi, does anyone here know Java? Can I ask a question?

Nobody knows the question yet, or whether they can help.

A question someone can answer

Sara

Hi! I am trying to convert the string “3.5” to a number in Java. Integer.parseInt throws a NumberFormatException. What should I use to read a decimal number?

The goal, approach, and error are clear. There is something to answer.

Why does asking directly help?

“Does anyone know this tool?” asks people to commit before they know the question. Posting the question itself lets anyone with useful knowledge join in when they have time.

Describe your goal, what you have tried, and what actually happened. Your question does not need to be long or perfect. It just needs enough context for someone to understand the problem.

Being new is okay. This guide should make conversations easier to start. Be kind to people who are still learning how to ask.
