A guide to askingHello, with a question

Say hello.
And ask your question.

A friendly greeting is welcome. Include your question in the same message so the conversation can move forward.

About a 2-minute read

A conversation that stalls

Sara

Hi! Anyone there? I have a problem. Can you help?

The other person has to wait for the next message several times.

A question someone can answer

Sara

Hi! I want to display today’s date as yyyy-MM-dd in Java. My current output includes the time as well. How can I show just the date?

Someone can answer even if they read your message later.

Keep the greeting. Remove the wait.

In text conversations, someone may read your message minutes or hours later. If your only message is “Hi,” their reply starts another wait before the actual question arrives.

Put the greeting and question together. For a complex issue, start with a short summary and the essential context, then add supporting details.

This is not a request to be abrupt. “Hi, I am running into this problem…” is both friendly and useful.
